Visit the Volcano

Witness the power and beauty of mother nature. Volcano National Park is home to two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, which have been shaping the island for millions of years. You can explore the park's diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to barren lava fields, and learn about the rich Hawaiian culture and history that are intertwined with the volcanoes.

Attractions you can enjoy at Volcano National Park:

Volcano

You can see the glowing crater of Halemaumau, which doubled in size after a major eruption in 2018. You can also watch steam rise from the ground at Steaming Bluff and Sulphur Banks, or marvel at the lava formations at Kilauea Iki Overlook and Thurston Lava Tube.

Lava tubes

These are natural tunnels formed by flowing lava that cooled and hardened on the surface. You can walk through some of them, such as Thurston Lava Tube, which is lit by electric lights, or Kazumura Cave, which is the longest and deepest lava tube in the world.

Steam vents

These are openings in the ground where hot gases escape from the magma chamber below. They create a misty and mysterious atmosphere, especially in the early morning or evening. You can see them along Crater Rim Drive or at Sulphur Banks.

Visitors Center

If you want to buy some souvenirs or snacks, you can stop by the gift shop at Kilauea Visitor Center. The shop is operated by Hawaii Pacific Parks Association, which supports park programs and projects. You can find books, maps, posters, clothing, jewelry, and more.

Hiking trails

There are many trails in Volcano National Park that suit different levels of difficulty and interest. You can hike along the rim of a crater, through a rainforest, or across a lava field. Some of the popular trails are Kilauea Iki Trail, Devastation Trail, Crater Rim Trail, and Chain of Craters Road.

Kahuku Unit

This is a separate section of Volcano National Park that is located about an hour's drive south of the main entrance. It covers 116,000 acres of land that was once part of a ranch. You can see different types of volcanoes, such as cinder cones and pit craters, as well as native plants and animals.

Volcano National Park is a place where you can experience the wonder and awe of nature's forces. It is also a place where you can learn about the culture and history of Hawaii and its people. It is a place that you will never forget.
